Directed by Jules Aaron, International City Theatres new staging of Clarks play capitalizes on its key strengths. A successful mixture of comedic and dramatic vignettes, Southern Comforts is so devoid of plot as to be essentially a character study. Van Dusen is Gus Klingman, a crusty, stick-in-the-mud Yankee who has lived on the same New Jersey street his entire life. Learned portrays Amanda Cross, a textbook steel magnolia: a feisty yet ladylike Tennessee native who frequently visits Guss town to spend time with her daughter and grandkids.
Both characters have been alone since the deaths of their spouses, leaving them free to pursue new romantic relationships. For different reasons, though, neither has re-coupled. Once their paths initially cross, they tentatively in fact, almost painfully begin to explore the possibility of finding a new life partner during their twilight years.
Clark doesnt belittle or condescend to her characters, nor does she exalt them. Both Gus and Amanda have become set in their ways and accustomed to living alone. That makes the prospect of socializing and dating let alone becoming a couple, marrying and moving in together an especially rocky one.
The resulting story is safe, G-rated comedy a pleasant if unremarkable look at the topic of romance among the aged. Though the subject of death is raised frequently, the tone is generally lightly comedic and the work itself can be categorized as of the feel-good variety.
Aaron and company play everything realistically. Thankfully, they dont exaggerate the scripts comedy for the sake of the cheap laugh nor overplay its more dramatic moments. This makes it relatively easy for us to relate to Gus and Amanda as real people whose emotional concerns deserve not just our scrutiny but our respect and empathy.
Clark establishes the dynamic early on that Amanda is and has always been selfless, willing to make sacrifices for her husband, while Gus is unwittingly self-centered, unwilling to make changes to accommodate anyone else, including Amanda. As we suspect, these two approaches are set on a collision course once the two decide to marry and share Guss large, deliberately uncluttered house (beautifully depicted by set designer Kurt Boetcher).
Like Olivia Walton, her character in The Waltons television series, Learneds Amanda is generous and compassionate. But Amanda is more direct and forthright than Ma Walton. She doesnt shy from voicing her deepest emotions, and she expects Gus to do the same. Learned makes the character credible by balancing her spunk with her more delicate side, all expressed through a low-key Southern dialect and charming demeanor.
The character of Gus is oversimplified almost to the point of a stereotype. Hes basically a sturdy, simple man who enjoys simple pleasures like working with his hands or watching baseball. To him, having a woman around is just part of the overall pattern of life. Until meeting Amanda, he hasnt ever really viewed a wife or romantic partners happiness as worthy of his consideration.
Its obvious from watching ICTs fine production that Clarks sympathies and viewpoint were generated from Amandas side. Everything about Amanda is deliberate, reasonable and nuanced, while Gus is more or less a collection of traits packaged into a stubborn and often maddeningly (for Amanda) clueless personality.
In handling this disparity, Aaron and his actors leave well enough alone, which is especially vital in Van Dusens case. The actor doesnt try to sugar-coat the character to make us like him better, nor does he go overboard on Guss crustiness. What we see in Van Dusens growly, clipped delivery is a World War II veteran who, like Amandas first husband, was so unnerved by combat that he still suffers PTSD-like reactions from sounds as prosaic as thunder.
Perhaps the greatest joy of watching Southern Comforts is seeing the way Amanda is able to cause Gus to accept change in his life and thus to grow as a person, from not getting her subtle, often lightly sarcastic humor and being squeamish about intimacy to re-attuning himself to her warmth, intelligence and sophistication.
