Lost love tops list of most common regrets study reveals

Pining for the one that got away? You’re not alone.

Research suggests that romantic relationships are the most common regret amongst American adults, followed by family interactions, education, career, finances and parenting.

So why are Americans sorrowful when it comes to their lost loves?

“Their reasons covered quite a wide range,” study author Dr. Neale Roese explained to the Star. “One theme was the one who got away or a missed opportunity. But more often they centred on recent marital or relationship troubles involving break ups or divorce. Some regret not working to make the relationship stronger, others that they didn’t get out of it quicker.”

Roese, a professor of marketing at Kellogg School of Management, and his co-author Mike Morrison, of the University of Illinois, analyzed results from 370 phone conversations with adult Americans, where respondents were asked to describe a single regret from their lives.

According to the study, to be published in the journal Social Psychological & Personality Science, other top regrets included family (16 per cent), career (12 per cent), money (10 per cent), parenting (9 per cent) health (6 per cent) and friends (3 per cent).

But there was a difference in the regrets expressed by men and women.

“The major overall finding was that men were more likely to emphasize regrets about their career or education, whereas women were more focused on romance, relationships and interactions with family and kids,” said Roese.

In fact 44 per cent of women brought up romantic trials during the telephone survey, while only 19 per cent of men thought they were worth a mention. 34 per cent of men reported having work-oriented regrets versus 27 per cent of women.

A person’s relationship status also affected their regrets: singles were far more likely to muse over lost loves than those with a partner.

All of the regrets were evenly divided between situations people acted on or those they chose to ignore, but events that were not acted on were shown to be regretted by a respondent for longer.

While not specifically examined, there also seemed to be a frequent link between regrets and a sense of guilt.

“Regret and guilt both address an adherence to moral standards,” said Roese. While analyzing responses Roese noticed “many mentions of what looks like guilty feelings when people were talking about something they should have done differently.”

Roese notes that while regrets can be harmful to people’s mental health they can also act as a positive, pushing those contemplating their past to change their behaviour.

This is the first study to examine common regrets in adults. Past studies focused on college students whose main avenues of remorse focused on studying and their careers.

The survey was conducted by cold calling Americans across the country. So, were some relieved after expressing their regrets to a stranger?

“I did get the sense that a fair number of the people were happy to have shared their regrets with us,” said Roese.

The study is part of an ongoing investigation into regret and mental health by Roese and his colleagues. Roese hopes that further research will be useful in assembling new therapies for depression in the future.
