FRANKLIN — Airing of the Quilts will be held May 7 and throughout downtown Franklin, businesses and homeowners will hang quilts from their storefronts and porches.
?This is event is an outdoor quilt show of sorts,? said Linda Schlott, Franklin Main Street Program Executive Director. ?After a long winter, you see many people putting items outdoors to air, especially quilts. What better way to combine tradition and heritage with this new event.?
While the downtown area will be the focus of the event, everyone is invited to join in to create a county-wide display of quilts. Simply hang a quilt on your porch, deck, clothes line or even over a bush in your front yard to air. It?s that simple. There is no registration or charge to participate.
?Since this is Mother?s Day Weekend, what better way to honor your mother or special woman in your life,? said Schlott. ?In fact, I will be hanging my quilts in honor of my mother. This is a special way to remember all that they?ve done for you.?
Airing of the Quilts is also meant to be a celebration of the craftsmanship and artistry of quilters in the area. Visitors are invited to meet area quilters at several locations throughout Macon County.
The Smoky Mountain Quilters Guild, Macon County Quilt Trail project, and Macon County Art Association will have displays on the square in Historic Downtown Franklin. The Cowee Quilters will be demonstrating their craft at Pleasant Hill AME Church in the West?s Mill District as well as airing quilts there. Activities are also planned during the seasonal grand opening of Rickman Store and in other locations in the Cowee area.
?The quilters of the Franklin area are known for the quality craftsmanship of their quilts,? said Deb Heatherly, Chairman of the Macon County Quilt Trail project. ?Airing of the Quilts brings this artistry to the forefront through public display. We encourage everyone to not only enjoy the quilt displays downtown, but to visit the Cowee Community to see their activities, take time to tour the quilt trail, drop by the Gemboree and experience just a lovely, relaxing day in Franklin and Macon County,? Heatherly concluded.
Residents can have their quilts and location added to a list that will be handed out during the event by calling 524-2516. Deadline to submit your name and location for the list is April 29.
