Gottlieb to coach Cal women: Lindsay Gottlieb is returning to California as head coach of the womens team.
Gottlieb left her job as UC Santa Barbaras coach to replace Joanne Boyle, who accepted the Virginia job earlier this month.
Gottlieb was on Boyles staff at Cal from 2005 to 2008 and served as associate head coach in her final season before taking the job at UCSB, where she went 56-39.
George Washington fires Hobbs: Karl Hobbs was fired as mens coach at George Washington after 10 seasons at the school. A person familiar with the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said Hobbs, 49, was offered a chance to resign but declined.
Hobbs firing comes less than a week after Patrick Nero was introduced as George Washingtons new athletic director.
Hobbs had a 166-129 record, including 52-64 the last four seasons. His contract was to expire next year.
Colgate hires Langel: Temple assistant Matt Langel, 32, was hired as Colgate mens coach. He succeeds Emmett Davis, 51, who was released from his contract last month. Davis was 165-212 in 13 seasons at Colgate.
Ex-San Diego player Johnson pleads not guilty: Brandon Johnson, who left San Diego as its career scoring leader, made an appearance in federal court in a sports-bribery case.
Johnson pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and returned home to Houston, where he was arrested April 9. He is free on a $25,000 bond.
The indictment alleges Johnson took a bribe to influence a USD game in February 2010 and, while playing for an NBA Development League team, solicited someone else this January to affect the outcome of USD games.

Kozuka wins qualifying at worlds: When the world championships got under way, a Japanese skater was atop the standings.
Takahiko Kozuka easily won the mens qualifying at worlds, which were moved to Moscow from Japan after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that has left more than 26,000 people dead or missing. Worlds were scheduled to begin March 21 in Tokyo.
The top 12 in qualifying advanced to Wednesdays short program, joining 18 direct entries.
