Whether staying in Aggieland this summer for work or classes, students find themselves wanting to get out and enjoy what they can of summertime. With more free time than usual and less people in town, Bryan-College Station has a lot to offer this summer.
There are several in Bryan where you can have a picnic outside or go running with friends. Parks like Copperfield have tennis and volleyball courts and at the Astin Recreational Center students can feed the ducks on Municipal Lake. For those looking to escape the summer heat, Adamson lagoon in Bee Creek Park is an option. The park has the only small water park in College Station that has waterslides, a pool with a diving board and water basketball.
Josh Vasquez, senior community development major, said one of his favorite areas in the B-CS is Lake Bryan.
I took a mountain biking class last semester where we would go up to Lake Bryan and after that I started going out there every other weekend Vasquez said. Its really nice. The trails are really well kept up and easy rides for people starting but the trails also got parts for more experienced riders.
Vasquez said that even if students arent interested in the trails, an entire day can be spent at Lake Bryan barbequing or bringing lawn chairs and sitting near the water spending time with family and friends.
Duncan Price, a senior psychology major, said among places to hang out and relax in College Station, there are also many opportunities to have fun while giving back.
[In the summer] you can start up a weekly game night with your friends in town or join the sailing club and for 60 dollars, they teach you how to sail and let you sail anytime you want. But also volunteer Price said. While the students are gone, there are still people in need in the community.
Food banks, animal shelters, hospitals, and other businesses have plenty of volunteer openings in the summer. You can volunteer with friends and make a memorable experience out of contributing your time to help.
Downtown Bryan is home to a variety of restaurants and shops that cater to people of all interests. Upcoming events are listed on the downtown Bryan website. Weekly activities including singer and songwriter night and salsa lessons at the Village are among other popular activities. The annual Fourth of July celebration at Heritage Park in Bryan is an event many people look forward to. The all-day celebration is free to the public and includes fireworks and a parade.
Senior philosophy major Moses Kidd said he likes to try new places in downtown Bryan with his friends and it never seems to disappoint. He said he particularly enjoys the Mexican restaurants and different bands that come perform in the area.
I know for a fact that Bryan is great for eclectic people who want experiences in live music, art, and good food Kidd said.
