It was a night that brought smiles to children, parents, and law enforcement alike.
The Santa Cops came to target Tuesday night to help area children go shopping for not only themselves, but their families as well.
The annual event, put on by the Fort Dodge Police Association and Webster County Deputies Association, pairs a child with a member of either the Fort Dodge Police Department, Webster County Sheriffs Department, Iowa State Patrol or the Webster County reserve unit. Armed with $100, the kids are free to buy whatever they want in the store.
Valerie Dooley, 5, of Fort Dodge, went shopping with the Rev. Al Henderson, chaplain for the police and sheriffs departments.
I liked getting my brothers toys and going shopping with the cop, she said.
Dooley said her favorite item she purchased was a set of Barbie dolls that she got for herself, which she liked because it sings.
Henderson added Dooley put others first while she was shopping.
She covered her brothers first, he said. In fact, until her mom showed up, she wasnt buying anything for herself.
All throughout Target, children and law enforcement officers could be spotted picking up toys and games, as well as other items like perfume and shampoo.
Venessa Hersheys daughter, Lilly Blair, bought items for her whole family. Hershey said she enjoyed the Santa Cops program.
Its hard times right now, and any help is great, she said. Anything that makes the kids smile is a good thing. Its a chance for them to do something fun instead of having me shop for them.
Lt. Kelly Hindman, commander for District 7 of the Iowa State Patrol, went shopping with 11-year-old Kevin Struecker, a student at Community Christian School. Hindman, who has participated in Santa Cops before, enjoys the program.
I think its great sharing Christmas with the kids, he said. I love watching them buy and shop for things they might not otherwise be able to buy.
Struecker, who bought some items for himself, said he enjoyed going with the cop and buying things.
Fort Dodge Police Capt. Mike Buske, who helped organize Santa Cops, said this year appears to have been successful.
The kids have been excited, he said. Its been more fun than before.
Seven-year-old Brooklyn Lynem bought a bike with some of her money.
I liked shopping with the cop and telling him where to go, she said with a smile as she sat on her new bike.
Darein Brookshire, 7, said the money helped him replace broken toys he had at home.
Since I get to spend a hundred dollars, I get to buy some wrestlers to play with, he said. Mine at home are broken.
The money for Santa Cops is raised by donations from the community. Its estimated around 80 children participated in this years Santa Cops, which continues tonight at Target.
